Four Rangers earn MACJC All-State honors

Four Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger baseball players have been rewarded for their outstanding play this spring by being selected to the MACJC All-State team.

Seth Milliorn and Chad Wardlaw (pictured) were chosen first team All-State, while Mark Husband and Drew Griffin earned second team honors.

Northwest finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 27-24 and placed fourth in the MACJC North Division with a 14-10 mark.

Wardlaw, a freshman outfielder from Olive Branch, led the Rangers in hitting with a .354 average. Wardlaw was also among the national leaders in stolen bases with 29 steals in 30 attempts. Milliorn, a sophomore second baseman from Olive Branch, was third on the Northwest squad with a .321 average. He also hit five home runs, 11 doubles, and collected a team-leading 33 RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Husband of Tunica led the Rangers in victories this season by posting a 7-2 record. Husband chalked up an ERA of 3.30 and registered 48 strikeouts in 53 innings. Griffin, a freshman shortstop from Somerville, Tenn., hit a team-leading eight home runs to go along with his .315 average. Griffin also racked up 30 RBIs and seven doubles.

 


 

Northwest ends season with playoff losses to Jones County

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers ran into one of the state's hottest teams in the opening round of the MACJC playoffs.

Northwest was swept by the Jones County Bobcats in a best-of-three series May 7 and 8 at William Carey College in Hattiesburg. Jones County won by scores of 12-1 and 8-0 to end the Rangers' season at 27-24.

The MACJC South Division champion Bobcats showed why they won 14 of their last 16 contests.  Jones County used timely hitting, some solid defense, and good pitching to eliminate Northwest from post-season play.  Northwest, the No. 4 seed from the MACJC North Division, closed the season by dropping seven of its final 10 games.

The Bobcats jumped to a 6-0 lead after three innings in the opening contest. Jones County put the game away with six additional runs in the fifth frame.

Northwest's lone run came in the first inning when freshman shortstop Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., singled home Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley. Griffin had two hits in the game.

Ranger freshman pitcher Charley Sullivan of Oxford was tagged with the loss to drop his record to 3-5. 

Northwest and Jones County held each other scoreless over the first four innings of the second contest. The Bobcats got their offense rolling in the sixth inning by scoring seven runs which led to the victory. 

The Rangers had just two hits in the game with freshman catcher Drew Klepzig of Hernando collecting both.

Northwest sophomore pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford shouldered the loss and moved his record to 6-5.

 


 

Rangers close regular season by splitting doubleheader with Coahoma

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers split their final regular season doubleheader with the Coahoma Tigers April 30 in Clarksdale. Northwest won the opener 9-4, but lost to Coahoma for the first time in school history in the nightcap 11-4.

Northwest, which finished the regular season 27-22 and 14-10 in the division, has lost six of its last 10 games. 

The Rangers used a 13-hit attack to knock off Coahoma in the opening contest. Freshman outfielder Chad Wardlaw of Olive Branch had three of those hits and four stolen bases.

Northwest freshman third baseman Ethan Bright of Batesville hit a two-RBI double as part of a five-run fifth inning. Freshman shortstop Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., added an RBI-single in that frame.

Pitcher Mark Husband, a sophomore from Tunica, improved his record to 7-2.

Coahoma out-hit the Rangers 11-6 in the nightcap to earn the victory. The Tigers led 4-2 after the first inning and stretched their advantage to 9-4 after five frames. Sophomore Davis Horton of Oxford collected two hits and a pair of RBIs for Northwest.

Ranger sophomore pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford took the loss to drop his record to 6-4.


 


 

Griffin's two-run single secures playoff berth for Northwest

Freshman shortstop Drew Griffin (pictured) hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to lift the Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger baseball team to a 6-4 victory against the East Mississippi Lions in the first game of a doubleheader April 27 in Scooba.

Even though Northwest dropped the nightcap to East Mississippi 2-1, the Rangers clinched a spot in the post-season with one doubleheader left on the schedule. Northwest closes the regular season Friday, April 30 with a trip to Clarksdale to battle Coahoma.

The Rangers, 26-21 overall, are currently tied with Northeast for third place in the MACJC North Division with both teams holding 13-9 records. Mississippi Delta is two games behind Northwest and Northeast in the standings with an 11-11 mark. The Rangers have the tiebreaker edge against both Mississippi Delta and Northeast after winning three of four games from both teams during the regular season.

Griffin, of Somerville, Tenn., lined a two-out pitch to left field to score Chad Wardlaw and Seth Milliorn, both of Olive Branch, for the game-winning runs against East Mississippi.

Northwest freshman third baseman Ethan Bright of Batesville collected four of the Rangers' nine hits in the contest, including a pair of doubles.

Northwest sophomore pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford tossed the last three innings in relief and earned the victory to improve his record to 6-3.

The Rangers managed just four hits in the nightcap. Northwest cut its deficit to 2-1 in the seventh frame when Griffin singled home Joel Rich of Southaven from second base. Rich led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch.

Tarus Hervey, a freshman pitcher from Water Valley, struck out nine in the contest, but was shouldered with the loss to drop his record to 4-2.

 




Rangers belt three homers to salvage a split with Mississippi Delta

Powered by a trio of home runs, the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers knocked off the Mississippi Delta Trojans 10-3 in the second game of a doubleheader April 21 at Ranger Field in Senatobia. 

Northwest dropped the first contest to the Trojans 4-3. The Rangers are 25-20 overall and in third place in the MACJC North Division with a 12-8 mark.

Northwest sophomore second baseman Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch collected the first of the Rangers' three home runs in the second game with a solo shot in the opening inning. Sophomore designated hitter Hunter Parham of Southaven gave Northwest a 6-3 lead in the fourth frame by hitting the team's third grand slam of the season.

The Rangers put the game out of reach in the sixth inning when sophomore first baseman Davis Horton of Oxford blasted a three-run over the wall in right center. In four games against Mississippi Delta this spring, Horton totaled nine hits, 11 RBIs, and a pair of homers.

Northwest also got a solid pitching performance from sophomore Daniel Husband of Tunica who struck out seven in earning the complete game victory to improve his record to 6-2.

Mississippi Delta held a 3-2 lead in the opening game, but the Rangers tied the score in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Tyler Benson of Pope that scored Joel Rich of Southaven.

The Trojans scored the winning run in the top of the seventh on an RBI-double.

Northwest freshman pitcher Charley Sullivan of Oxford took the loss to drop his record to 3-4.

 


 

Rich helps Northwest maintain share of MACJC North Division lead

Northwest Mississippi Community College first baseman Joel Rich collected four RBI to help the Rangers salvage a doubleheader split with the Itawamba Indians April 13 in Senatobia. 

Rich (pictured) hit a two-run homer and a two-run double as Northwest claimed an 11-3 victory in the second contest. Itawamba won the opener 16-10. 

The split between the Rangers and Indians coupled with Northeast's sweep of East Mississippi set up a three-way tie for first place in the MACJC North Division.  Northwest is 24-17 overall and deadlocked with Itawamba and Northeast with identical division records of 11-5.

"These last few weeks of the regular season should really be fun and interesting," said Ranger Head Coach Mark Carson. "Our guys know what's on the line. We have to focus and play with intensity the rest of the season."

In its second game victory, Northwest scored eight of its 11 runs with two outs. Rich, a sophomore from Southaven, hit his fifth homer of the season in the third inning to break a 3-3 tie.

Rich added his two-run double as part of a six-run, fourth inning for the Rangers. Sophomore outfielder Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley added a two-run single in the frame, while freshman shortstop Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., picked up an RBI-double. Northwest racked up 10 hits in the game.

Ranger sophomore pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford tossed the complete seven innings to get the win and improve to 5-3. Shaw allowed five hits and struck out four, while giving up one earned run.

Northwest collected 14 hits in the first contest, but the Indians scored seven runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Rangers. 

Northwest's Griffin, who had three hits in the game, picked up his team-leading eighth homer of the season with a solo blast in the second inning, but the Rangers trailed 7-2 after three frames. 

The Rangers cut the margin to 9-8 by pushing four runs across in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. Northwest freshman outfielder Chad Wardlaw of Olive Branch, who had three RBI in the nightcap, sparked the Rangers with a two-run double to score Griffin and Tyler Benson of Pope.

Sophomore pitcher Mark Husband of Tunica shouldered the loss to drop his record to 5-2. 

 


 

Milliorn's walk-off homer helps Rangers tie for first place in north division

Seth Milliorn lined the first pitch he saw in the eighth inning over the wall in right center to keep the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers' hopes for an MACJC North Division championship alive. 

Northwest used Milliorn's walk-off two-run homer with two outs to defeat the Northeast Tigers 9-7 in the first game of a doubleheader April 10 at Ranger Field in Senatobia. Northeast claimed the nightcap 4-1.

The Rangers, 23-16 overall, moved into a first-place tie with Itawamba in the north division with both teams holding identical 10-4 marks. Northwest and Itawamba will square off Tuesday, April 13 in Senatobia in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.

Milliorn, a sophomore second baseman from Olive Branch, had three hits in the opening contest and scored three runs.

"This was a big day for us," said Northwest Head Coach Mark Carson. "It's getting near the end of the regular season and this is when we need to start turning it up a notch."

The Rangers led 7-3 after six innings thanks to a a solo home run by freshman catcher Drew Klepzig of Hernando in the second frame and a a two-run blast by sophomore first baseman Joel Rich of Southaven in the sixth inning.

Northeast countered by pushing four runs across in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7 and force extra innings.

Northwest freshman Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., earned the victory by throwing on inning in relief to even his record at 1-1. Starting pitcher Tarus Hervey, a freshman from Water Valley, threw the first seven innings and registered seven strikeouts.

The Tigers claimed a 4-0 lead after four innings in the nightcap which led to the win. 

The Rangers' lone run came on Rich's fourth homer of the season in the sixth frame. Northwest tried to rally in the seventh when Klepzig and sophomore third baseman Hunter Parham of Southaven led off the inning with back-to-back base hits, but Northeast was able to turn a double play to squash the Rangers' comeback attempt.

Northwest freshman starting pitcher Heath Kitchens of Pontotoc shouldered the loss to drop his record to 1-1. 

 


 

Northwest holds onto second place in division by sweeping Coahoma

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers closed the first half of their MACJC North Division schedule by sweeping the Coahoma Tigers April 7 at Ranger Field in Senatobia. 

Northwest won by scores of 6-3 and 12-2 to improve to 22-15 overall. The Rangers are one game behind division-leading Itawamba in the north standings. Itawamba is 10-2 in the division, followed by Northwest at 9-3.

In the first game against Coahoma, the Rangers led 2-1 after three innings thanks to an RBI-groundout by second baseman Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch. Northwest put the game away by pushing four runs across in the fourth frame. 

Ranger catcher Drew Klepzig of Hernando provided a spark with a two-run single, while outfielder Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley added an RBI-double.

Northwest starting pitcher Mark Husband of Tunica upped his record to 5-1 by throwing the first five innings and striking out three. 

Ferrell collected two more doubles in the second contest as the Rangers racked up 12 hits. Ferrell got the Ranger offense going in the second inning with a two-run double.

Northwest first baseman Joel Rich of Southaven added an RBI-double as part of a six-run fifth inning to help the Rangers run-rule the Tigers. Northwest shortstop Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., hit his third home run in four games with a solo blast in the fifth frame to push his team-leading total to seven. Outfielder Chad Wardlaw of Olive Branch hit his first homer of the spring with a solo shot in the fourth inning.

Ranger pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford earned the victory by striking out six and allowing just three hits. Shaw moved his record to 4-3.

 




Ferrell's trio of two-run doubles helps Rangers take a pair from East Mississippi

Outfielder Ronnie Ferrell (pictured) hit three doubles and racked up six RBI to power the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers to a 10-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against the East Mississippi Lions April 2 in Senatobia. 

Northwest completed the sweep of the Lions by taking the second contest 6-2. The Rangers improved to 19-14 overall and took over sole possession of second place in the MACJC North Division standings with a 7-3 mark.

"It was great to see us come out and swing the bats the way we did," said Northwest Head Coach Mark Carson.  "We also got some solid pitching. This was an important doubleheader for us."

Ferrell, a sophomore from Water Valley, collected a trio of two-run doubles in the opening game. Ferrell's first double was part of a five-run second inning in which designated hitter Davis Horton of Oxford hit his third home run of the season. Shortstop Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., and outfielder Chad Wardlaw of Olive Branch added RBI-singles in that frame.

Ferrell added another two-run double in the fourth inning, followed by by an RBI-double by Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch. Ferrell's last double helped the Rangers run-rule East Mississippi in the sixth frame.

Northwest freshman pitcher Charley Sullivan of Oxford tossed six scoreless innings to improve his record to 3-2. Sullivan allowed just two hits and struck out four.

The Rangers got all the offense they needed in the first inning of the second contest. Northwest pushed five runs across the plate in its first at-bat. Sophomore first baseman Joel Rich of Southaven collected a two-run single, while third baseman Ethan Bright of Batesville hit a run-scoring double. Griffin also chipped in with a sacrifice fly to score Tyler Benson of Pope.

Ranger freshman pitcher Tarus Hervey of Water Valley threw the first six innings and struck out six to keep his record perfect at 4-0. Hervey surrendered just three hits and walked one.

 




Horton's eight-RBI day fuels Northwest's sweep of Mississippi Delta

Sophomore Davis Horton (pictured) provided the offensive spark the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers have been waiting for most of the spring.

Horton, of Oxford, collected seven hits and eight RBI to lead Northwest to a doubleheader sweep of the Mississippi Delta Trojans March 27 at Bellipani Field in Moorhead. The Rangers won by scores of 12-7 and 9-6 to improve to 17-10 overall and 5-3 in the MACJC North Division.

Horton, who was Northwest's designated hitter in the first game and first baseman in the second, entered the twin bill with Mississippi Delta batting .295 with five RBI. At the end of the day, he upped his batting average to .377 and moved his RBI total to 13.

Horton picked up six of his eight RBI in the opening contest on four hits, including a pair of doubles. Horton had a two-run single in the third inning, a three-run double in the fourth frame, and an RBI-double in the seventh.

Northwest racked up 16 hits in the game with sophomore outfielders Tyler Benson of Pope and Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley adding three each. Ferrell also picked up a two RBI.

Ranger freshman starting pitcher Charley Sullivan of Oxford improved his record to 3-2 by throwing 4.2 innings and allowing four earned runs. Sullivan struck out three and walked three.

Horton was credited with three of Northwest's 12 hits in the second contest, including a two-run homer in the third inning.

The Rangers claimed a 5-1 lead after five innings and stretched their advantage to 9-1 by pushing four runs across in the sixth. Northwest freshman catcher Drew Klepzig of Hernando collected an RBI-double in the sixth, while sophomore second baseman Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch added an RBI-single.

Ranger freshman starting pitcher Tarus Hervey of Water Valley kept his record perfect at 3-0 by striking out six in 5.1 innings of work. Hervey limited the Trojans to three hits and two earned runs.

 


 

Rangers use long ball to salvage doubleheader split with Holmes

Powered by a four home run explosion, the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers were able to salvage a doubleheader split with the Holmes Bulldogs March 24 at Ranger Field in Senatobia.

Northwest bounced from a lackluster performance in the first contest which Holmes won 13-3. The Ranger bats came alive in the second game as they pounded out 15 hits off four different Bulldog pitchers en route to a 19-2 victory.

Northwest pushed its overall record to 15-10, including a 3-3 mark in the MACJC North Division.

The Rangers jumped to 13-0 lead after the first two innings of the second game thanks to a quartet of home runs. Northwest sophomore second baseman Tyler Benson (pictured) of Pope sparked the offensive outburst with grand slam in the first frame. Two batters later, freshman shortstop Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., added a two-run blast over the wall in left field. 

Ranger sophomore first baseman Joel Rich and sophomore outfielder Kevin Crum, both of Southaven, got in on the act in the second inning. Rich jacked a two-run homer, while Crum collected a three-run shot.

Benson also added an RBI-single in the second frame for a career-high five RBI in the contest. Crum also racked up five RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the third inning and collecting an RBI-single in the fourth.

Northwest freshman third baseman Ethan Bright of Batesville had a team-high three hits, while sophomore designated hitter Hunter Parham of Southaven scored four runs. Bright, Benson, and Crum scored three runs each.

Ranger sophomore pitcher Mark Husband of Tunica registered six strikeouts in five innings of work to notch the victory and improve his record to 4-1. Husband allowed just two hits.

Northwest couldn't dig itself out of a 10-0 hole in the first game which led to the loss. The Rangers managed just four hits, two of them from the bat of sophomore outfielder Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley. 

Benson was credited with an RBI-single in the fourth inning, while Rich drew a walk with the bases loaded for his third RBI of the day.

Northwest sophomore starting pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford was touched for seven hits and six earned runs in the first two innings and took the loss to fall to 3-2.

 


 

Northwest begins MACJC North Division play with 2-2 mark

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers had trouble getting their offense on track and dropped a doubleheader to the Itawamba Indians March 20 at Crubaugh Field in Fulton.

Northwest, which managed just five hits in the two contests, fell to 14-9 overall and 2-2 in the MACJC North Division.

Ranger freshman pitcher Charley Sullivan (pictured) of Oxford tossed a two-hitter in the opening game. Itawamba scored a run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, then added another in the fifth frame on a solo home run. Sullivan struck out three, walked five, and hit two batters to drop his record to 1-2.

Offensively, Northwest stranded nine base runners. The Rangers biggest threat came in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with one out, but Northwest catcher Drew Klepzig of Hernando lined out to the Indian shortstop who touched second base to complete a double play.

Northwest collected just three hits in the second game. Itawamba claimed a 2-0 lead after four innings, then pushed four more runs across in the fifth frame.

The Rangers helped out the Indians by committing five errors.

Northwest freshman pitcher Ethan Bright of Batesville gave up three runs, two of them unearned, and shouldered the loss to even his record at 1-1.

Things went much better for the Rangers in their division-opener March 17 against the Northeast Tigers in Bonneville. Northwest swept the doubleheader by scores of 4-3 and 5-4.

Bright's three-run homer in the third inning, his fourth of the season, was the difference in the first game. The Rangers also used an RBI-single from sophomore second baseman Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch in the first frame. Milliorn had three hits of Northwest's eight hits.

Ranger sophomore pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford threw the first four innings to earn the victory and improve to 3-1. Freshman pitcher Heath Kitchens of Pontotoc relieved Shaw in the fifth frame and struck out five to earn his first save.

Northwest trailed the Tigers 4-3 headed into the final inning of the second game, but Ranger sophomore outfielder Kevin Crum of Southaven delivered a two-out, bases-loaded double to score Bright and Tyler Benson of Pope.

The Rangers tied the contest at 3-3 in the top half of the sixth frame when sophomore Hunter Parham of Southaven delivered a two-run single that scored Bright and Chris Gullick of Water Valley.

Northeast scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.

Northwest sophomore pitcher Adam Moore of Senatobia tossed the final two innings in relief and got the win to move his record to 1-0. 


 




Diamond Rangers prepare for division play by sweeping Arkansas Baptist

In preparation for the opening of MACJC North Division play, the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers swept a pair of games from the Arkansas Baptist Buffaloes March 11 in Little Rock, Ark. 

Northwest used some solid pitching to win the opener 1-0, then broke out the bats to claim the nightcap 10-2.  The Rangers, who have won seven of their last eight contests, improved to 11-6 overall.

Northwest freshman pitcher Tarus Hervey of Water Valley silenced the Arkansas Baptist offense in the first contest. Hervey scattered three hits over 6.2 innings of work, while striking out nine to improve his record to 2-0. Freshman Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., picked up his first save. 

Hervey got the Rangers out of two bases-loaded jams in the game. He struck out the side with the bases full in the first inning, then foiled the Buffaloes squeeze play in the sixth frame by catching a bunt in the air and throwing to third to complete a double play.

Northwest freshman third baseman Ethan Bright (pictured right) of Batesville provided the eventual winning run in the first inning when he singled home outfielder Tyler Benson from third base.

Bright took the mound in the second game as the starting pitcher and earned the victory to move his record to 1-0. Bright threw the first four innings and struck out six, while allowing just three hits. 

The Rangers claimed a 4-2 lead after six frames, then exploded for six runs in the seventh inning. Sophomore Chris Gullick of Water Valley collected an RBI-triple in the seventh, while freshman Tyler Hadaway of Olive Branch added an RBI-double.

Northwest totaled 14 hits, five of them for extra bases. Benson and sophomore Davis Horton of Oxford led the way with three hits each, while Hadaway and Griffin added two each.

 

 


 

Milliorn's two extra base hits help Northwest split a doubleheader with Ellsworth

Northwest Mississippi Community College second baseman Seth Milliorn collected two hits and three RBI to help the Rangers salvage a doubleheader split with the Ellsworth Panthers March 8 at Ranger Field in Senatobia. 

Northwest defeated Ellsworth 6-3 in the second contest after dropping the opener 7-4. The Rangers moved their record to 9-6 overall.

Milliorn, a sophomore from Olive Branch, gave Northwest a 2-0 lead with his third home run of the season in the third inning of the second game. Milliorn picked up his team-leading 16th RBI of the spring with a double in the sixth inning to put the Rangers ahead 6-3.

Northwest sophomore outfielder Tyler Benson of Batesville also collected an RBI-double in the sixth.

Ranger starting pitcher Charley Sullivan, a freshman from Oxford, tossed the the complete game and struck out five to earn the victory and even his record at 1-1.

The Rangers chipped away at their deficit with sacrifice flies from Milliorn, freshman shortstop Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., and freshman catcher Drew Klepxig of Hernando.  Griffin also added an RBI-single in the sixth inning to cut the score to 5-4.

Ellsworth added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh frame to earn the win.

Northwest freshman pitcher Chase Boykin of Franklin, Tenn., was shouldered with the loss which dropped his record to 1-1. Boykin was touched for six hits and five earned runs in three innings of work.

 




Diamond Rangers pick up two victories at Wes Cliburn Tournament

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger baseball team pushed its win streak to four by winning a pair of games at the Wes Cliburn Tournament March 6 in Clinton.

Northwest knocked off Baton Rouge 10-4 and Kishwaukee 7-4 to improve its overall record to 8-5.

Ranger sophomore second baseman Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch collected a career-high five RBI in the victory against Baton Rouge, while freshman catcher Drew Klepzig of Hernando had four.

Milliorn hit a three-run homer, his second of the season, as part of a five-run fourth inning to give the Rangers a 8-1 lead. Milliorn also had a two-run double in the third frame. Klepzig got in on the act with a two-run double in the fourth inning and a blasted his first home run of the spring with a two-run shot in the fifth frame.

Northwest sophomore starting pitcher Mark Husband of Tunica improved his record to 3-1 by striking out seven in six innings of work. Husband allowed five hits and three earned runs.

A trio of Ranger pitchers racked up 13 strikeouts in the win against Kishwaukee. Northwest sophomore pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford registered nine of those strikeouts in five innings to get the victory and move his record to 2-1. Ranger freshman Ethan Bright of Batesville struck out three of the five batters he faced in relief, while freshman Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., had one.

Bright also did some work with his bat by cranking his third home run of the spring with a solo shot in the sixth inning. Northwest freshman catcher Joseph Blair of Batesville gave the Rangers a 4-1 lead with a three-run double in the second frame.

Milliorn collected a two-run single in the seventh inning to push Northwest's lead to 7-3 and sealed the win for the Rangers.

 


 

Northwest gets back on track by sweeping Southwest Tennessee

Freshman third baseman Ethan Bright collected three hits and three RBI to lead the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers to a 10-4 victory against the Southwest Tennessee Saluqis in the first game of a doubleheader March 3 at First Tennessee Fields in Cordova. 

Northwest also won the nightcap 6-2 to stop a five-game losing streak and improve its record to 6-5.

Bright, of Batesville, knocked in a pair of runs with an RBI-single in the first inning, then added an RBI-double in the sixth. He picked up another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the third frame to score first baseman Joel Rich of Southaven.

Rich also racked up three RBI in the game with a two-run single in the sixth inning and an RBI-groundout in the first.

The Rangers claimed a 5-2 lead after four frames when outfielder Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley tripled to score catcher Drew Klepzig of Hernando.

Northwest put the game out of reach by pushing four runs across in the sixth inning.

Ranger freshman pitcher Chase Boykin of Franklin, La., struck out five in the first four innings to get the win and improve his record to 1-1. Boykin allowed four hits and two earned runs.

In the second contest, Northwest used a quartet of pitchers to silence the Southwest Tennessee offense. The Ranger pitching staff collected nine strikeouts and surrendered just three hits.

Northwest freshman starting pitcher Tarus Hervey (pictured left) of Water Valley earned the victory by striking out five in four innings of work and moved his record to 1-0.

The Rangers scored three runs in the second inning on a couple of wild pitches by the Saluqis. Northwest second baseman Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch added an RBI-groundout to score Tyler Benson of Batesville.


 


 

Gulf Coast sweeps a doubleheader from Rangers in Senatobia

Still searching for some sort of consistency nine games into the 2010 season, the Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs Feb. 27 at Ranger Field in Senatobia.

Northwest lost to Gulf Coast by scores of 10-1 and 11-2 to drop its record to 4-5. After opening the season with a four-game win streak, the Rangers have dropped their last five contests.

Gulf Coast claimed a 8-0 lead in the first game before Northwest got on the scoreboard thanks to a solo home run by Ethan Bright of Batesville. The homer was Bright's second of the spring. Sophomores Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch and Joel Rich of Southaven accounted for half of the Rangers' eight hits by collecting two each.

Northwest sophomore pitcher Marshal Hamrick of Senatobia allowed five runs over the first three innings and took the loss to drop his record to 0-1. Hamrick struck out four and walked one.

The Rangers totaled six hits in the second game with Bright, Hunter Parham of Southaven, and Tyler Benson of Batesville picking up two each. One of Bright's hits was an RBI-single in the first inning, while Parham added an RBI-double in that same frame.

Northwest freshman pitcher Charley Sullivan of Oxford threw the first four innings and shouldered the loss to fall to 0-1. Sullivan was touched for six hits and five runs, three of which were unearned.

Rangers drop doubleheader to Northwest Shoals in Senatobia

After opening the season with four consecutive victories, the Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger baseball team has found the going rough lately by dropping three in a row. The Rangers lost both games of a doubleheader to the Northwest Shoals Patriots Feb. 24 in Senatobia. Northwest was edged 4-3 in the opener, then fell 5-2 in the nightcap.

In the first contest, the Rangers used a two-run single by freshman third baseman Ethan Bright of Batesville to claim a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Northwest stretched its advantage to 3-1 after four frames on an RBI-single by sophomore outfielder Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley. 

Northwest Shoals struck for three runs on three hits in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead.

The Rangers had a pair of golden opportunities to tie the contest in the fifth and sixth frames, but wasted those chances. Northwest sophomore second baseman Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch led off the fifth inning with a double and moved to third on a groundout by Hunter Parham of Southaven, but the next two Rangers struck out.

In the sixth frame, sophomore outfielder Kevin Crum of Southaven led off with a single and stole second base, but Northwest couldn't get the clutch hit it needed.

Crum, Milliorn, and freshman shortstop Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., had two hits each in the opener. Crum also had two stolen bases.

Ranger sophomore pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford tossed the complete game and struck out four to take the loss and drop his record to 1-1.

Northwest fell behind 4-1 in the second contest. The Rangers pushed a run across in the first inning on an RBI-single by sophomore Davis Horton of Oxford. Northwest added another run in the sixth inning when sophomore Tyler Benson of Batesville singled home Milliorn, but the Rangers couldn't get any closer.

Benson, Milliorn, and freshman Chad Wardlaw of Olive Branch each had two hits for Northwest.

Ranger sophomore pitcher Mark Husband of Tunica shouldered the loss to move his record to 2-1. Husband struck out five over the first five innings, while allowing four hits and two runs.

 

 




NWCC sweeps Rend Lake College, falls to Southeastern Iowa

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger baseball team moved to 4-0 by sweeping a doubleheader from the Rend Lake College Warriors Feb. 19 at Ranger Field in Senatobia. Northwest won the opener 6-5, then claimed the nightcap 10-8.

Northwest suffered its first loss of the season by falling to Southeastern Iowa 14-7 Feb. 21 in Senatobia.

In the first contest against Rend Lake, the Rangers claimed the victory in the bottom of the eighth inning when sophomore second baseman Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch singled with one out to score sophomore Kevin Crum of Southaven from third base. Crum reached base after being hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, and moved to second base after an intentional walk to Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley. Crum advanced to third after a throwing error by the Warriors' first baseman.

Milliorn's walk-off single was his third hit of the game. He added his first home run of the season with a solo blast in the fifth inning to give Northwest a 5-2 lead.

Rend Lake tied the contest at 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning by moving three runs across the plate.

Ranger sophomore pitcher Mark Husband of Tunica shut the Warriors down by retiring all three Rend Lake batters in the top of the eighth to get the win and move his record to 1-0.

Northwest hit three homers in the second game en route to claiming the victory. 

Freshman Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., collected a three-run blast in the third inning. Sophomore Hunter Parham of Southaven and freshman Ethan Bright of Batesville hit back-to-back homers in the first inning. Parham's was a two-run shot that also scored Ferrell. Both Parham and Bright had two hits each.

The Rangers held an 8-4 lead headed into the fifth before Rend Lake plated four runs to tie the contest.

Northwest scored the game-winning runs in the bottom half of the fifth when sophomore Davis Horton of Oxford scored on an error by the Warrior catcher and freshman Chad Wardlaw of Olive Branch scored on a wild pitch.

Ranger freshman pitcher Heath Kitchens of Pontotoc earned the win to improve to 1-0, while sophomore Adam Moore of Senatobia picked up his first save of the season.

Northwest fell behind Southeastern Iowa 8-2 after three innings and never recovered. The Rangers got back-to-back solo home runs from Horton and Crum in the fifth inning. Crum finished the contest with three hits.

Rangers open 2010 season by sweeping Arkansas Baptist College

Two superb pitching performances helped the Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger baseball team open the 2010 season with a pair of victories. Northwest swept a doubleheader from the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes by scores of 7-1 and 10-0 Feb. 7 at Ranger Field in Senatobia.

Northwest sophomore pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford, a University of Southern Mississippi signee, struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings and scattered six hits to earn the win. 

Offensively, the Rangers scored a pair of runs in the first inning when sophomores Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley and Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch scored on an Arkansas Baptist error. Northwest sophomore first baseman Joel Rich of Southaven pushed the lead to 3-0 with a solo home run in the fifth frame.

The Rangers added four more runs in the sixth inning thanks to RBI-singles by Rich and freshman third baseman Ethan Bright of Batesville. 

Northwest sophomore pitcher Mark Husband of Tunica was the star of the nightcap by striking out seven over the first four inning to get the victory. Husband allowed just two hits and walked none.

The Rangers built a 5-0 advantage after two innings when Milliorn and Hunter Parham of Southaven both drew bases loaded walks. Northwest freshman catcher Joseph Blair of Batesville aided the cause with an RBI-groundout, while freshman Drew Griffin of Bolivar, Tenn., collected an RBI-single.

Blair knocked in another run with an RBI-double as part of a five-run fourth inning. Freshman Chad Wardlaw of Olive Branch and sophomore Tyler Benson of Batesville both picked up an RBI-singles in that frame.
